Rae Woolnough

Rae Woolnough’s love of art and textiles has been a life long passion. From sewing her first garment at eight years of age to designing and making her own wedding dress, there has always been a connection with textiles and design. She has studied photography, life drawing, painting, interior design, pottery, graphic design and Fine Arts at University. Rae re-discovered felting over a decade ago and has continuously experimented and researched felting and felt making, exploring new and different techniques and textural directions.

Rae focuses on the minute world of texture and natural formations. Her studio is full of photos she has taken of mosses, lichens, rock formations and the bark of trees. These textures constantly inspire her as she experiments with felt, silk and different fibres to re-create the look and feel of these objects. Rae enjoys the irony of using soft fibres to depict these often hard surfaces. She is particularly interested in 'Shibori' techniques and uses these techniques in her felting practice.

Rae exhibits regularly and her artworks are held in private collections internationally. She also enjoys jointly exhibiting with her artist daughter - Meredith - also a fibre artist. Rae resides in The Hills district of Sydney, Australia, and her art studio backs onto natural bushland. She admits to spending too much time on her studio verandah, drinking tea, planning her next artwork, observing the wildlife and enjoying her surroundings.
