Michele Yamaguma
Using traditional Japanese themes with a contemporary touch, Michele strives to create a mood that ranges from serenity and calm to bright and playful. Inspiration for these collages comes from her extensive travels, environment, and the effect she wishes to bring into play. How do you feel when you view these pieces?
These collages combine several Japanese techniques of origami, chirigami and kirigami beginning with Japanese washi (handmade, silk-screened mulberry fiber paper) that is cut, torn or folded and layered with other art papers. Gold or silver paint strokes using a sumi-e technique are used as detail and to create movement. Next, metallic threads are added to further add dimension and movement. Also, many of the pieces use real leaves or bamboo that are painted and enhanced with gold.
Michele studied graphic arts in college and had worked for two years in this field then went on to other careers before returning to art ten years later. She has always doodled with paper, paint, polymer clay, ceramics and carpentry, which is why mixed media is where she is happiest creating. You can find her pieces in the S.F. Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco, and at Jeff Chang Gallery, Honolulu. Michele also has a schedule of art shows on her website where locations can range from Honolulu to Chicago.
