Claudia Anne Chase

Claudia Chase began weaving tapestry in 1984 on a rigid heddle loom and with only her imagination to guide her. As a self-taught tapestry weaver, she made every mistake possible. A few years later Claudia began mastering tapestry techniques and bought a suitable tapestry floor loom which drastically changed the quality of her work. In 1989 she was juried into the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and began selling her tapestries in the League stores. As tapestry took over more and more of her life, Claudia's tapestries found their way into galleries, office buildings, churches and private homes.

Claudia’s overriding philosophy when it comes to weaving and related mediums is that you should ultimately strive for perfection in any given medium which then gives you the tools to start mixing them up and creating new mediums. In Claudia’s personal journey, she has always worked backwards so that once she discovered tapestry weaving, she needed to learn how to dye wool and then spin wool so that she could really understand and have control over the entire process. Claudia still uses hand-dyed, hand-spun yarn, hand-painted silk yarn and best of all the Mirrix Loom, which Claudia designed in her quest for the perfect portable tapestry loom. Everything she does in weaving is based on her love of and fascination with color. Different materials deal with color very differently and she loves to combine them in order to achieve the effects seen in nature. Claudia’s art springs from her close relationship to nature.

Claudia began teaching tapestry soon after developing the Mirrix Loom in 1996. A couple of years later, she discovered that the Mirrix Loom could also double as a fantastic bead loom. It was then she began experimenting with bead weaving on a loom and eventually began to teach it. Claudia runs Mirrix Looms full-time from her New Hampshire studio but still takes time to teach and create.
