Robin McGee

The road to art has been a long and convoluted one for Robin. Born in upstate New York, he was always fascinated with the way things looked and started drawing early on. After trying a number of different occupations like construction, cook, sales, and mechanic, he realized the things he loved best were art and design.

Metals fascinated him and has always been his favorite medium. With experience in the commercial jewelry world and two art degrees, he found a niche in a college art department teaching jewelry and metalsmithing, something he loved to do. “Beginning students are a true wonder. That moment it all comes together is truly priceless.” While continuing to expand the variety of techniques for his students, he continued to refine his own work as he guided his students who were encouraged to try nearly anything as they explored the medium. The one hard and fast rule was no firearms. Otherwise, their ambitions were encouraged. Robin has over 20 years experience in teaching and over thirty in working metal.

Now living in the Low Country of South Carolina and surrounded by much natural beauty for inspiration, Robin pursues his art career making work in copper and silver and is active in a number of local and regional art organizations and guilds. His work is displayed in a number of galleries and collections around the country. Having narrowed the focus of his work, he concentrates on repoussé and chasing, old and rare techniques but still useful to make singular objects of great appeal and welcomes the chance to do the thing he loves most, return to teaching and share what he has learned.
